Board fence was the staple of fencing for all types of animal containment for decades. It is still widely used for horse fencing, and as decorative as well as functional fencing. This three board fence is constructed of 1 x 6 x 16' poplar treated boards, and full round CCA treated 5-6” x 8' fence posts. Posts are spaced every 15' and a cap or cover board is placed at every vertical board joint for a professional finished look. The treated boards and posts will ensure long life.

Post and rail fencing was primarily designed for corral or heavy pressure livestock areas. The 5 rail fence using treated posts and boards will give long life and a beautiful scene. Height of the posts and the number of rails are determined by the type of livestock that is being contained.

Although high tensile fencing has been in the U.S. for only 20 + years, its impact has been tremendous. This single strand 12 ½ gauge 200,000 PSI Class 3 galvanized wire can be used as a non electrified or electrified fence. It is very versatile, can be installed by a homeowner and lasts for many years. The number of wires or strands will depend on the type of animals you are containing or deterring. Whether to use electric and the number of electrified strands will also be decided upon by the type of animals. Post spacing will mainly be determined by the terrain. Post depth and post height on top of the ground will be determined by weather and frost depth, as well as animal height and stock pressure. Pictured here is a 6 strand high tensile fence with post spacing every 30' with 2 Polypicketts. High Tensile fencing uses some specifically designed tools and hardware for its erection. For more information on these tools view our fence components section.

The rugged look of split rail fence is ideal in a rustic setting. Its decorative uses are well known, but it is also very functional. Split rail is available in 2, 3, and 4 rail fence designs. The rails are pressure treated which will result in a longer life than non-treated rails. Due to recent Federal Government regulations, split rail fence cannot be treated with Copper Cromin Arsenate (CCA) when in use in residential or playground type situations. Alternate treatments approved by the Federal Government include Natural Select and (ACQ). Both of these products will also provide a longer life.

12 ½ gauge 179,000 PSI (pounds per square inch) High Tensile Wire Class 3 galvanized wires have been combined in different configurations to offer a wide variety of fencing options. Woven wire is available in any height from 4' to 10' and have a stay wire spacing of 3, 6” or 12”. Woven wire can be used for Cattle, Buffalo, Ostrich, Emu, Elk, Sheep, Goats and Deer containment and also Deer deterrent. Make sure to note that woven wire is a generic term - there are great differences in types of woven wire on the market. When considering woven wire, take into account the gauge, PSI rating and class of galvanization.

This economical fencing system is a 12 ½ gauge, 200,000 PSI High Tensile Wire bonded with a medium density polyethylene coating. Available in white, black, and brown in 1320' rolls, this coated wire horse fence was designed to prevent horses from being injured. This non-electrified product installs the same as traditional High Tensile Fence, using the same components, hardware, and tools. Horsecote has also been used as a decorative fence. The picture shown above incorporated 5 strands of Horsecote and 1 strand of 4 Horserail.

Hotcote is the same fencing system as Horsecote with the addition of black carbon, which is used as an electric current. The strands of black carbon are bonded to the Horsecote to make an effective electric fence to deter or contain animals. Hotcote is also available in white, black, and brown in 1320' rolls. Hotcote can be used alone or in conjunction with Horsecote, Horserail or traditional High Tensile Wire. The picture above shows 5strands of Hotcote Fence with 1 strand of 4” Horserail. Note the non-traditional bracing systems used in the Horsecote and Hotcote applications. This bracing system is recommended for use with horses - it aids in preventing legs or hooves from getting caught.

Painted board fence tends to be a predominant fence design for horses although it requires regular maintenance to sustain its beauty. Horserail was developed to fool the eye - providing the look of a traditional painted board fence without the regular maintenance. Horserail is available in colors of white, black or brown in 3 different size rails. 4.25”, 5”, and 6”. The 4.25” web is bonded between 2 - 12 ½ gauge 200,000 PSI wires which are bonded at the top and bottom for strength. The 5” web is bonded with 3 wires and the 6” web is bonded with 4 wires, which gives the 6” a wide board look.
